|Abstract:||The paper presents an analysis of potential contamination of soil and water by pyrethroids at the continental scale for Europe. Pyrethroids are widely used pesticides which, on the basis of their chemical and toxicological characteristics, may pose concerns about consequences for human health and ecosystems, although so far there is no strong evidence indicating actual risk. However, so far little monitoring has been performed and almost no experimental information is available. We perform an assessment exercise that demonstrates how accessible information and a geographic information system (GIS)-based modeling strategy allow the construction of maps of chemical concentration and fluxes, which highlight potential hot spots and suggest where to develop monitoring, in a quick and simple way. The approach presented here can be adopted for the generality of the many chemicals that need to be assessed for human health and ecological risk, and have no background monitoring data.|
