Geographical Aspects of Solar Electricity Generation in Europe

cover
The geographical dependency and distributed nature of solar electricity generation mean that we are often facing questions that require specific location-dependent answers. This has led to the development of geographic information system (GIS) for the estimation, verification, and management of photovoltaic (PV) systems. We present here such a system ¿ PVGIS - developed at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. In the first two sections, the PVGIS system is outlined as a research and policy-support instrument for Europe in the context of integrated management of solar electricity generation. An overview of the applied data and methodology is provided. The third section discusses issues of performance of PV systems in regions of the European Union and Europe. The fourth section provides an outline of the future needs to be supported by such a system.
