Detailed requirements for ship monitoring, quantified based on a number of distinct operational scenarios, are compared to the Sentinel-1 system parameters. It is found that Sentinel-1 can probably serve the majority of the scenarios to an acceptable extent. At the same time, any improvements in the system¿s parameters (such as noise level, tasking time, etc.) would still increase the value of the system for ship monitoring purposes.
