The paper aims to analyze the rise of social computing applications and to discuss its implications for the EU innovation landscape. It observes an exponential growth in the rise and take-up of social computing applications and discusses the changes this implies on the role of users in the innovation process. It also provides evidence on both the social and economic relevance of social computing and discusses it implications for innovation and competitiveness. Moreover, the paper points to both challenges and opportunities for research and policy.
