Fargione et al. (Reports, 29 February 2008, p1235) raise the important issue of competing land use needs in the planning of climate change mitigation strategies incorporating biofuel production. We highlight that such studies may have a destructive effect on a much-needed debate, heralding a series of opinions that fail to consider the wider scope of agricultural policy.
