Thermal Properties of Cermets Fuels for P&T Concepts
One of the most important aspects of P&T concepts is the development of fuels and targets for the transmutation of actinides. At ITU, the
efforts are concentrated on advanced fabrication processes for these fuels and on their characterization. Uranium-free materials are
studied, which contain the actinides either in solid solutions or as dispersed particles in the
inert ceramic or metallic matrix (also called "CERCER" and "CERMET", respectively). In some concepts, the actinides (Pu, Np, Am) are
stabilised in a host phase (e.g. stabilised zirconia). A series of characterisation measurements are needed in order to assess the
in-pile performance of these materials and to produce the necessary documentation to license the irradiation experiment.
