Greater Tolerance for Nuclear Materials
Faced with the prospect of building a new fleet of conventional but improved generation III (Gen III) nuclear reactors and the challenges
of designing future Gen IV systems, the materials community is currently re-establishing its fascination with nuclear materials. Although
worldwide research support remains patchy, a number of countries are, once again, focusing a greater proportion of their
strategic funding on nuclear science and engineering projects. As it is unlikely that funding will ever approach the heady levels
seen in the early days of nuclear-power research, we must make it plain how crucial these available funds are in facilitating
the research that will enable us to make informed decisions on nuclear systems. Demonstrating the significance of our work
might encourage further support and lead to sustainable research programmes into nuclear materials.
