In this paper a literature review on empirical analyses of structural change in the agricultural sector is provided. The purpose of it is twofold: (1) to identify and describe the methods applied in this context and (2) to characterize the existing knowledge regarding de-terminants of structural change. The large number of empirical analyses and the variety of methodologies and specific aspects considered illustrate the complexity of the phenomenon. However, the generality of existing empirical insights is rather limited. Learning from results of other methodological approaches, extending the geographical coverage of analyses, and investing in computationally more efficient estimation techniques might lead to further pro-gress in this respect.
