Real-time Impact Estimation of Large Earthquakes Using USGS Shakemaps
This study is an attempt to obtain a crude estimation about the seismic losses after a major earthquake in a very short duration of time in terms of the affected population and infrastructure. The test bed that has been considered is Turkey, for which there exists adequate information in order to develop simple functions regarding seismic damage and loss due to different hazard levels. In long term this study can be extended to the global scale through GDACS, by making use of the procedures developed on the local scale in order to alert the international community in the case of a sudden major earthquake with a preliminary picture of what has happened.
