Methods for the Determination of Phthalates in Food

The issue of phthalates in food was raised in 2007 in meetings of the Experts Group on Industrial and Environmental Contaminants, organised by the Directorate General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO). The experts considered it necessary to evaluate the status of measurement capabilities of official food control laboratories in EU prior taking any further action. In response to this, the Institute for Reference Materials which is part of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC-IRMM) was requested to conduct a survey among European food control laboratories on analytical methods applied for the determination of phthalates in food. The survey was conducted in order to evaluate comparability of the analysis protocols, to highlight potential pitfalls and as a follow up to provide support to laboratories that are new in that field.
