Next generation mobile network deployment strategies
Electronic communications markets are evolving into an increasing complex ecosystem where mobile operators converge and compete among them and with fixed players for providing combined services and ubiquitous broadband connectivity, and where new players (content and application providers and hardware and software vendors) have an increasingly important role. Within this framework, this paper shows that the deployment of Next Generation Mobile Networks (NMGN) is an unavoidable strategic response to these challenges. It also points out that although actually mobile operators have started to invest in NGMN, they maintain their doubts about whether the applications and services offered over a NGMN shall be sufficient to provide an indispensable return on investment and, at present, they are not sure which killer application, if any, will develop to provide new revenues stream. The final conclusion of the paper is that NGMN deployment will take place, but its pace will depend tremendously on the existence of business models beyond mere connectivity and on the (very unfortunately still undecided) competitive ¿ regulatory framework.
