Abstract: THE ECDIN DATABANK INSTALLED AT THE JRC ISPRA HAS BEEN ACCESSED USING THE PROGRAM LANGUAGE NATURAL. THIS DIRECT ACCESS TO THE DATABANK FILES DIFFERS FROM THE USE OF THE MENUE-DRIVEN DISPLAY WHICH IS AVAILABLE FOR THE EXTERNAL ON-LINE USER OF ECDIN. THE INTERDISCIPLINARY CHARACTER OF THE ECDIN DATABANK MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO COMBINE RELEVANT INFORMATION FROM DIFFERENT FILES OF INTE- REST, AND THE DIRECT ACCESS TO THE DATA FILES OPENS NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR THE ECDIN USER. IN THE SECTOR OF WATER POLLUTION RESEARCH AND CONTROL MATHEMATICAL MODELS ARE GAINING INTEREST ON A BROAD BASIS. DURING THE PRESENT STUDY A MA- THEMATICAL MODEL HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR THE BEHAVIOUR OF XENOBIOTIC COMPOUNDS (ORGANIC CHEMICALS) IN AN ACTIVATED SLUDGE REACTOR. AT PRESENT ONLY 1 REACTOR IS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT AT STEADY STATE CONDITIONS, BUT THE MODEL MAY BE EXTENDED TO A SERIES OF REACTORS AT DYNAMIC CONDITIONS AT A LARGER STAGE. THE MODEL CONCEPT AND STRUCTURE OF THE COMPUTER PROGRAM IS BASED ON THE SOCALLED IAWPRC- MODEL. THE LANGUAGE USED IS SAS (BASED ON PL1 STATEMENTS). EXAMPLES WITH GRAPHICAL DISPLAY OF SIMULATION RUNS ARE GIVEN TO DESCRIBE THE INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS PARAMETERS TO THE BEHAVIOUR OF XE IN THE REACTOR. AS THE BEHAVIOUR OF XENOBIOTIC COMPOUNDS IN WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS AND IN THE AQUATIC EN- VIRONMENT IS A SUBJECT WHICH PRESUMABLY WILL BE OF INCREASED CONCERN FOR THE FUTURE, IT IS SUGGESTED TO INITIATE COLLECTION OF DATA FROM LITERATURE ON STOICHIOMETRY AND KINETIC CONSTANTS AND DESIGN OF A NEW DATA FILE FOR THESE DATA IN ECDIN
