Interim Storage Facility for LLW of Decommissioning Nuclear Research Facilities
The European Commission¿s Joint Research Centre Ispra Site (JRC-Ispra) has initiated a Decommissioning and Waste Management (D&WM) Programme of all its nuclear facilities. In the frame of this programme, due to the fact that, at least until 2020, there will not be a final depository in Italy, it has been decided to build an interim storage facility (ISF) to host conditioned low level waste (LLW) that had been produced during the operation of JRC-Ispra nuclear research reactors and laboratories and that will be produced from their decommissioning. The ISF will be built considering a lifetime of 50 years and with the capability to host a radiation inventory of 30 TBq. An important characteristic of the ISF is that its perimeter walls and the roof will be built with prefabricated components, more precisely precast reinforced concrete panels. This choice, besides the preservation of safety features of the facility, will permit a considerably reduction in the construction time and, at the same time, will simplify its future decommissioning time and costs.
