Microstructural Evolution Due to Post Ageing of two Alpha Bombarded Mn-Cr Austenitic Steels
IN THE PRESENT WORK THE MICROSTRUCTURAL EVOLUTION OF TWO ALPHA-BOMBARDED MN- CR AUSTENITIC STEELS IS REPORTED. STEEL 1 WAS COMPOSED OF 17WT%MN-10%CR-0.2% C-0.06%N AND STEEL 2 OF 12WT%MN-17%CR-0.1%C-0.35%N. DISC SPECIMENS WERE PREPA- RED FROM THESE MATERIALS WHICH WERE UNIFORMLY IMPLANTED WITH HE AT A CONCENTRA- TION OF 500 APPM IN THE ISPRA CYCLOTRON AT A TEMPERATURE OF 310 K. THE TOTAL DAMAGE DUE TO ALPHA - PARTICLE BOMBARDMENT IN EACH SAMPLE WAS ESTIMATED TO BE ABOUT 0.1 DPA. THE POST BOMBARDMENT ANNEALING WAS CARRIED OUT AT TEMPERATURES OF 773 AND 1023 K. THE RESULTS OBTAINED ON THE SAMPLES AGED AFTER ALPHA - BOMBARDMENT ARE COMPARED WITH OBSERVATIONS MADE ON SPECIMENS AGED IN THE ABSEN- CE OF HE. SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES WERE OBSERVED FOR BOTH MATERIALS BETWEEN THE PRECIPITATION BEHAVIOUR OF SAMPLES AGED IN THE PRESENCE OR ABSENCE OF HE. THE OBSERVED PHENOMENA ARE TENTATIVELY INTERPRETED ON THE BASIS OF DIFFERENCES AND CHANGES IN THE STACKING FAULT ENERGY, CHARGES IN THE NUCLEATION BEHAVIOUR AND DIFFERENCES IN THE VACANCY CONCENTRATION IN THE TWO MATERIALS.
