Towards Building Shadow Extraction in VHR SAR Images using Mathematical Morphology
In this paper, we propose a novel way to extract shadows cast by buildings from VHR SAR imagery using mathematical morphology. We first characterize the appearance of building shadow areas in VHR SAR. Then, we translate this description into a sequence of morphological operators to extract the shadow areas. We demonstrate the proposed method using spaceborne meter resolution TerraSAR-X data from Dorsten, Germany.
