Advances in the Electrolysis of Tritiated Water for its Application to a Fusion Plasma Processing Plant

THE EXHAUST PLASMA PROCESSING SCHEME, PROPOSED A FEW YEARS AGO AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO TSTA PLANT IN OPERATION AT LOS ALAMOS (NM, USA), REQUIRED FURTHER RESEARCH ON SOME TOPICS AS ON A LOW LIQUID INVENTORY ELECTROLYRE CELL AND ON THE TYPES OF SEPARATOR OR MEMBRANE RESISTANT TO BETA RADIATION. MOREOVER, IT SUGGESTED TO VERIFY THE VALUE OF THE SEPARATION FACTORS AMONG H2, D2, T2 DURING THE ELECTROLYSIS BY USING DIFFERENT MATERIALS FOR THE CATHODE IN ALKALINE MEDIUM. SINCE THEN, THE RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL WORK CARRIED OUT IN THESE DIRECTIONS HAVE SHOWN THE FEASIBILITY OF THE PROCESS ALTHOUGH SOME IMPROVEMENTS CAAN STILL BE REACHED. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE RESEARCH CARRIED OUT IN THE JRC-ISPRA (ITALY) WITH THE SUPPORT OF SOME INSTITUTES WHO ARE UNDER STUDY CONTRACTS WITH US.
