Activation Product Monitors of a Thermonuclear Fusion Plasma

cover
Three materials were used as activation targets (Ti, Ti(90%)V(4%)Al(6%) and MgF2) inside the JET (Joint European Torus) vacuum chamber to determine charged particle losses from the plasma and damage of reactor walls. The gamma emitting radionuclides 7Be, 56Co, 57Co, 46Sc and 58Co were measured using ultra low-level gamma-ray spectrometry and were found to arise from activation of bulk sample materials and activation of sample surface contaminant materials sputtered from other Tokamak parts. This leads to conclusions about plasma characteristics. Monte Carlo modelling allowed determination of activities even when the activity within the targets was inhomogeneous.
