Abstract: EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS CAN ORIGINATE A SIGNIFICANT ERROR IN THE DETERMINATION OF THE WEIGHT OF PARTICULATE MATTER. THE POSSIBLE ERRORS HAVE BEEN ANALYSED IN THE COLLECTION AND FILTRATION PHASES OF MARINE WATER SAMPLES. A FURTHER VALIDATION IS GIVEN TO THE IMPORTANCE OF THE "BLACK" AND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE FILTERS. THIS WORK HAS BEEN PERFORMED IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE CHARACTERIZATION STUDIES OF THE MARINE PARTICULATE MATTER IN ORDER TO CALIBRATE AND INTERPRET REMOTE SENSING IMAGERY.
