Techno-economic Modelling of Global Climate Policies
The European Commission is preparing a Communication on the Copenhagen negotiations, which is to be published in January 2009. The Communication will address all the key building blocks of the Copenhagen Agreement as foreseen in the Bali Roadmap. The Communication is accompanied by a Commission's Impact Assessment. IPTS (DG JRC) delivers the scientific support to this Impact Assessment by providing modeling results on mitigation on a global scale. The Climate Change conference is a good and timely opportunity to present the scientific background of the Commission's work on mitigation of carbon emissions. Currently, IPTS is preparing all the modelling on mitigation that will back up this communication and that will be represented in its impact assessment. It will address mitigation commitments needed by developed countries and appropriate mitigation actions by developing countries (including in the area of
deforestation) to achieve the EU's set objective of limiting global climate change to 2 degrees Celsius, in the context of a gradually developing carbon market.
