Modelling Energy-intensive Sectors

The threat of climate change induced by anthropogenic CO2 emissions has led to the interest in modelling the interactions between energy, economic, and environmental systems. The first models able to represents those interactions were developed in the seventies, in the context of the oil crisis, in order to analyse the links between the energy system and the economy. In those years were developed as well the first general equilibrium models and the first optimization models of energy systems. One of the models that is used to study the links between energy, economy, and environment is the POLES model (Prospective Outlook on Long-term Energy Systems). POLES has been jointly developed by LEPII (Laboratoire d¿économie de la production et de l¿intégration internationale, Nacional Scientific Research Centre of France), by IPTS-JRC-EC (Institute for Prospective Technological Studies, Joint Research Centre, European Commission), y por la DG-RTD-EC (Directorate General for Research and Development, European Commission), with funds provided by the JOULE (EC) and ECOTECH (France) programmes. Numerous European institutions contributed qualitative and quantitatively to the development of the technical and economic assumptions upon which POLES is founded. The model is currently used, and very actively developed, by the European Commission as one its tools to support policy-making.
