Putting the "Integration" in Science-Policy-Stakeholders Interface
The analysis of the interactions between science, policy and stakeholders in water management leads us to consider the process of information exchange and knowledge production occurring at their interfaces. This process has often been addressed as integration. In water management the idea of integration is linked to the flow of information between the involved actors, the reciprocal understanding of needs and perspective, and the production of new knowledge including different expertise and potential competing interests, in the framework of a shared commitment to enhance the water resource protection and management.
In this chapter we analyze the role and the mechanisms of integration in the science-policy-stakeholder interactions and we reflect on the type of research promoting such integration to support sustainable water management. We back the analysis providing some practical experiences from the STRIVER project (2009), showing difficulties and promising outcomes of integration.
