Technological accidents and natural disasters have a major impact on society due to their potential to result in a loss of lives, damaging long-term consequences on the environment and the economy, and disruption of community life. A comprehensive analysis of the circumstances that led to a disaster yields valuable lessons that can contribute towards the prevention or mitigation of a future event. This paper introduces the Natural and Environmental Disaster Information Exchange System (NEDIES), which is one of the European Communities' systems for lessons learning and information exchange on the management of technological accidents and natural disasters. The paper describes the structure and functioning of NEDIES and briefly outlines the NEDIES methodology for lessons learning. As an example lessons learned on landslide disasters in Europe and guidelines for flash-flood prevention and mitigation are presented. The mainstreaming of lessons learned into disaster risk management practices and the most important fields of application of lessons learned are also discussed.
