Abstract: THE ARTICLE REVIEWS AND INTERPRETS CURRENT CHANGES TAKING PLACE IN THE TROPICAL FORESTS OF THE WORLD. THE VARIOUS FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO LARGE SCALE DESTRUCTION OF THIS BIOME IN THE AMAZON AS WELL AS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA ARE DESCRIBED. CHANGING PATTERNS OF INTERACTIONS BETWEEN MAN AND CLIMATE ARE IDENTIFIED; THEIR SIGNIFICANCE IN A CONTRACT OF GROWING POPULATION PRESSURE AND POSSIBLE CLIMATE CHANGE IS ASSESSED. THE ARTICLE EMPHASIZES THE ROLE OF FIRE IN SHAPING THE FUTURE OF TROPICAL ECOSYSTEMS.
