EU-Wide Lake Ecological Classification Based on Phytoplankton
In the present work I will present a novel approach for European Union (EU) wide classification of the ecological quality of surface waters and harmonisation of the classification systems required by the Water Framework Directive (EC, 2000). The task of my dissertation is the establishment of EU-wide lake ecological classification according to one phytoplankton parameter - the concentration of chlorophyll-a. Recently the outcome of the work was formulated as ¿Commission Decision establishing the values of the Member State monitoring system classifications as a result of the intercalibration exercise¿ and is clearly a decisive step towards protecting Europe¿s lake ecosystems
