Introduction to the Journal of Environmental Radioactivity - Special Issue: Advances in Radon Mapping
Radon is widely considered to be the main contributor to exposure from natural background radiation. In addition, exposure to radon is suspected to be the cause of tens of thousands of deaths from lung cancer globally each year. Consequently most national authorities have launched monitoring campaigns to delineate areas at risk and millions of radon-related measurements have been made. Measurements are then turned into "radon risk maps", but differences in monitoring methods remain an obstacle to accurately comparing the results in various countries.
