Thanks to the Internet not only sharing, but also collecting spatial information are involving wider and wider groups of population. The spatial information infrastructure provides an overview of available data, services, and the conditions of their use and enables the interoperability of systems. For strategic development of spatial information infrastructures assessing the societal impact is indispensable regarding the users¿ requirements and the applied technology. The ever growing number of business solutions and the e-government applications underline the importance of the spatially aware information society. Az összes információ 70-80%-a helyhez kötheto. Az infokommunikációs technológia fejlodésével a térkép átadja helyét a digitális téradatoknak és helyhez kötött szolgáltatásoknak. Az internetnek köszönhetoen nemcsak az adatok megosztása, hanem azok gyujtése is egyre szélesebb társadalmi réteg bevonásával történik. A térinformációs infrastruktúra áttekintést nyújt téradatokról szolgáltatásokról, s azok igénybevételének feltételeirol, s lehetové teszi a rendszerek interoperabilitását. A térinformációs infrastruktúra stratégiai tervezésénél szükség van a társadalmi hatások értékelésére, a felhasználói igények és az alkalmazott muszaki megoldások tekinteténben. A szaporodó üzleti alkalmazások és az e-közigzgatás igazolják, hogy a tér-tudatosság az információs társadalom része.
