GB-SAR and MIMO radars: alternative ways of forming a synthetic aperture
The interest in MIMO radars has been growing lately because they keep the performance close to a conventional antenna array, making possible at the same time to take advantage of several hardware benefits. However, MIMO radar techniques allow to generate a synthetic aperture which is also comparable to that of a conventional GB-SAR system. In this paper the upgrade of an existing GB-SAR system through embedding MIMO capabilities is described together with the benefits that this new configuration can provide. We present the results gathered with the new system and we describe in particular the prospective potential that the new system can deliver.
