Scientific and technical information was used for a long time by foresters and conservationists in their daily management (forest inventories, ecosystem mapping...). As technological developments made them more accessible to policy makers, time has come for policy-makers to better use this information to guide definition and monitoring of global forest policies. The paper adresses the main policies of EC for tropical forestry and how the techniques developed at JRC can support the definition and the implementation of such policies.
