Ranching in the Amazon Basin. Large-Scale Changes Observed by AVHRR

cover
AS THE LARGEST AREA OF REMAINING TROPICAL FOREST, THE AMAZON BASIN IS REGARDED AS ONE OF THE LAST AGRICULTURAL FRONTIERS OF THE INTERTROPICAL BENT. EXTENSIVE PORTIONS OF THIS BIOME ARE CURRENTLY CONVERTED FOR CROPPING, RANCHING AND LOGGING. VARIOUS FACTORS HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE RAPID TRANSFORMATION OF THE FOREST INTO AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPES: DEMOGRAPHIC PRESSURES AND ECONOMIC HARDSHIP IN OTHER REGIONSOF THEE SOUTH AMERICAN CONTINENT, INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT SUCH AS THE OPENING AND PAVING OF NEW ROADS, TAX INCENTIVES, LAND TENURE LAWS AND COLONIZATION
