Integration of Co-Extra results in EU tools for traceability

cover
The European Union has developed an extensive legal framework on GMOs. Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 on GM food/feed in particular requires the mandatory submission of a GMO detection method by the applicant and the subsequent validation of this detection method. Based on these legislative requirements on GMOs, the European Union has developed over the last ten years an extensive scientific knowledge in GMO analysis and validation of GMO detection methods. The European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC), together with the European Network on GMO Laboratories (ENGL), has made several achievements towards the development and harmonisation of GMO detection methods in the EU. These topics are not only relevant within the EU regulatory context, but also for a wide variety of stakeholders worldwide. Based on its experience in the field, the European Union is ready to play a leading role in the movement towards global harmonisation of GMO analysis. Key words: GMO analysis, detection method, validation, harmonisation.
