The 4th International Topical Meeting on High Temperature Reactor Technology (HTR 2008) was held from September 28 to October 1, 2008 in Washington D.C. following earlier events in Petten, Beijing and Johannesburg. This particular conference emphasized the nuclear cogeneration capabilities of High Temperature Reactor technology and well deserved its motto "Beyond the Grid". The conference made very clear that any serious effort towards climate change prevention and security of energy supply must also consider nuclear process heat applications. The conference efficiently enhanced networking between researchers and vendors on the one hand side and industrial process heat end-users on the other. A rich set of presentations from policy makers and industry introduced twelve technical tracks where scientific advances were presented. Attendees learned how the latest technologies are being developed for future use to create safe, clean and economical sources of nuclear energy to power our industries. This special edition is a snapshot of outstanding and extended contributions which we hope reflects well the enticing atmosphere at the conference. The editors would like to thank the conference attendees who offered their papers for this special edition, and the experts who thoroughly reviewed them, thus setting the high standards for HTR 2010 in Prague.
