Fabrication and characterization on (U,Am)O2 target for GEN(IV) fast reactor system
INTRODUCTION
The Generation IV (Gen IV) initiative provides a route towards sustainable energy supply and reduced minor actinide waste production. A novelty of the fast reactors to be deployed is the requirement that they transmute their own actinide waste, thereby increasing their proliferation resistance. Fabrication processes for these new fuels are still under development, and at the JRC-ITU a special facility for R&D in this area has been constructed ¿ "The Minor Actinide Laboratory". In addition, advanced spectroscopy and diffraction methods are being deployed to underpin the material properties of these fuels with a solid basic science approach.
