Seismic Design of Masonry Buildings According to Chinese Standards and Eurocode 8
The paper presents the basic requirements and procedures for the seismic design of masonry buildings according to the Chinese Code for Seismic Design of Buildings and Eurocode 8. The two codes pursue similar objectives, adopt the same principles and follow similar procedures for the seismic design of buildings, namely limit-state design, use of more refined analysis methods for irregular or important structures and verification of strength and deformation capacity. Concerning masonry buildings in particular, the Chinese code requires that they remain elastic in the event of a frequent earthquake, whereas according to Eurocode 8 they are designed for limited ductility capacity under the action of a rare earthquake. Stemming from this essential difference, the two codes prescribe different design forces, verifications and detailing requirements.
