This paper examines the opportunities for and constraints imposed on the conduct of scientific agri-economic policy research from various viewpoints. We conclude that, regardless of the viewpoint taken, the activity is characterised by both opportunities and constraints, and confers both opportunities and constraints on the researchers concerned. The nature of the opportunities and constraints, however, varies with the stance of the beholder.
