Forest Fires

cover
Europe is experiencing an increasing number and impact of disasters due to natural hazards and technological accidents caused by a combination of changes in its physical, technological and human/social systems. The report discusses the occurrence and impacts of disasters and the underlying hazards in Europe for the period 1998¿2009. This contribution to the report is focused on forest fires. An average of 70 000 fires take place every year in Europe. They destroy more than half a million hectares of the forested areas in Europe, mainly in the Mediterranean region (it accounts for 70 % of fires and is responsible for 85 % of the total burnt area in Europe).
