Biodiversiteit en maatschappij

Biodiversity and society: 2010 was the international year of biodiversity. The 2010 target of stopping or reducing the loss of habitats and species was, however, not met. Several pressures such as land use change and pollution continue to increase. Biodiversity policies have failed, mainly because of a lack of integration, public interest and funding of conservation. A new global strategy renews the targets by 2020. Further conservation should be complemented by restoration of ecosystems to enhance the services they provide. Tools to achieve this are the valuation of natural capital and ecosystem services and the integration of biodiversity into other policies.
