This chapter describes the approaches to establishing quality assurance for characterising polymer electrolyte fuel cells. A multitude of different aspects of fuel cells are to be regulated and standardised in order to ensure the quality and safety of such power generation systems. In this review, results of standardised evaluation protocols of FCTESQA (project of the Fifth Framework Programme of the European Community for research, technological development and demonstration activities) for the performance of polymer electrolyte fuel cells under various operating conditions, standardised single cells, life time investigations and the design of experiments are presented.
