This report, attempts to give a concise, yet complete overview of the developments in the field of transport during the last years, with emphasis in the European situation. Some hints on international developments are also given where appropriate. It should be noted, that this report, focuses on the technological developments and does not attempt to shed light in the complex issue of economics and competitiveness in this field.
This document serves a two-fold purpose:
1. As a main input for the preparation of the Scientific Assessment of transport technologies, which was a part of a new Commission initiative, the Strategic Transport Technologies Plan (STTP). The STTP was designed as a follow-up of the Transport White Paper. The Strategic Transport Technology Plan, addressing the technology pillar of the White Paper, is hence designed to contribute to these objectives in the mid-term, through stimulating research and innovation in some strategic technological areas in the field of transport. The use of Intelligent Transport Systems within modes and across modes has been identified early on as of the main issues within the STTP.
2. As a coherent description of the actual state of play in the field, in order to assist the JRC in identifying its potential role in the development, standardisation and deployment of ITS in Europe.
