Monitoring natural resources in conflict areas: the case of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Some countries in the world are rich in natural resources, but poorly developed and politically unstable. The mineral wealth of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been a major factor in years of conflict. Several studies have revealed that the DRC’s rich natural resources – including timber, diamonds, copper, cobalt, gold, uranium and coltan – is an ongoing issue fuelling the conflict. The overall scope of the services presented is to provide information support for the surveillance and situation awareness in the field of “Natural Resources and Conflict Prevention”.
