Use of wall to wall moderate and high resolution satellite imagery to monitor forest cover across Europe
This chapter describes the development of two recently released high resolution pan-European Forest Maps produced at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission for the years 2000 and 2006. We present the underlying satellite and auxiliary datasets and provide an overview about the methodology and the main processing steps that governed their production. Validation, as a most important aspect of applicability, receives special attention and the outlook highlights some aspects, such as differences arising from "forest use" versus "forest cover" concepts, which are important for prospective users.
