This article tries to build the history of an important indexing and retrieval tool done during the sixties in the field of nuclear science known as Euratom thesaurus. After a brief introduction of the historical and political context in which this tool was born, the Euratom thesaurus has been described in its two editions, analyzing the nature, the scope and in general the aim of this innovative controlled language.
