BIOMASS INDICATORS FROM SATELLITE DATA FOR FOOD SECURITY MONITORING

The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission operationally monitors semi-arid countries using Earth Observation (EO) systems. This contribution describes the application of a new method for assessing vegetation condition with a focus on biomass indicators. The method, based on the retrieval of vegetation phenology from SPOT-VEGETATION satellite data, was used to assess the extent and the impact of the drought that hit the Horn of Africa region (HoA) in 2010-2011.
