Mainstreaming ecosystem services into EU policy
The concept of ecosystem services (ES) is increasingly mainstreamed in EU policies. For proper development and implementation of the policies the availability of spatially explicit information on ES is essential. This paper presents a synthesis of the PRESS initiative (PEER Research on Ecosystem Services). In support of the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020, this initiative demonstrated a multi-scale mapping and assessment approach of ES using case studies on recreation, water purification and pollination. The spatial assessment of these ES included maps displaying the potential and actual supply of these services at different spatial scales in both biophysical and monetary units. Scenarios were used to estimate changes in the flow of ES and to estimate benefits that arise from policy changes.
