Editorial ( on Development of new structural materials for advanced fission and fusion reactor systems)
In view of a timely definition of design parameters, in particular for primary circuits, new structural materials have to be qualified during the next decade within an international R&D effort. Recent progress in materials science, supported by computer modelling and advanced materials characterisation techniques, has the potential to accelerate the process of a new structural materials development and qualification. To address those issues from various perspectives, a first joint European Commission (EC) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Topical Meeting on ‘‘Development of new structural materials for advanced fission and fusion reactor systems”, had been hosted by Fusion for Energy (F4E) on 5–9 October 2009 in Barcelona (Spain), in cooperation with the European Nuclear Society (ENS). Due to its success a second Meeting on the same topic was co-organised by the EC and the IAEA on 16-20 April 2012 in Ispra (Italy). This scientific event was hosted by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the EC. The primary scope of the meeting was the direct information exchange and cross-fertilisation of different disciplines from the advanced fission and fusion communities. It included also a review of recent progress of worldwide R&D activities. Apart from design specific aspects of fission and fusion reactor systems, and the innovative materials concepts, which are presently under the consideration, also the cross-system structural materials aspects were discussed. Special emphasis was given to the scientific exchange between the participating experts from physics, materials science, mechanical and nuclear engineering.
