ILCD Data Network: an IT infrastructure for quality-assured LCI data sharing

Increasingly, business and government want to asses and communicate the environmental performance of product and organizations. This requires a life cycle approach; considering supply chains, use and end of life along with all associated health, environment, resource and social burdens. Facilitating international networking of data, rather than relying on single providers, is essential to expand data availability and enhance data quality. This is facilitated by the ILCD Data Network (ILCD DN) that has been launched early this year. In its 2013 Communication on “Building the Single Market for Green Products”, and in response to commitments in the Communication on "A resource-efficient Europe – Flagship initiative under the Europe 2020 Strategy”, the Commission adopted a Recommendation on the use of the Environmental Footprint as methods to measure and communicate the environmental performance of products and of organisations. This ILCD DN consists on the data infrastructure that is critical for further uptake of these and other life cycle based methods for their successful implementation in business and policy decision support. This paper will briefly provide details on the concept behind the ILCD DN, its current status of implementation and future perspectives.
