Requirements and Strategies for In Situ radiometry in Support of Satellite Ocean Color

cover
Comprehensive field measurement programs supporting satellite ocean color missions are essential for the generation of data products with the traceability, accuracy and consistency required for climate change investigations. Within such a context, in situ optical radiometry plays a fundamental role in system vicarious calibration, validation of data products, and the development of bio-optical models for the generation of derived products. Given the requirements set for the upcoming ocean color missions targeted to climate change investigations, and taking into account lessons learnt during previous missions, this work outlines the basic strategies which should be considered in the design and implementation of measurement programs needed to deliver the required in situ optical radiometry data. Emphasis is placed on the need for at least one long-term dedicated site supporting system vicarious calibration and a large number of globally distributed measurements for the validation of satellite radiometric and derived data products. Finally, the importance of standardization and inter-comparison are emphasized as elements essential to assuring the highest data quality.
