|Abstract:||The European strategy aimed at the 2020 goals is mainly focused on the implementation of the nearly zero energy buildings (nZEBs) as the building target from 2018 afterwards. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview on the current European status of nZEBs categories, definitions, and calculation methodologies. Many open issues are presented and discussed to contribute to the clarification and the establishment of agreed definitions. The paper reports the progress towards the implementation of nZEBs and it underlines the effort and the urgency to integrate the nZEBs notion into national building codes and international standards. It also shows how this topic has gained a growing attention in the last decade, but the achievement of a common agreed nZEBs concept is still far to be reached in most of the Member States (MS).|
