Abstract: Over the last decade photovoltaics has been one of the fastest growing industries, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 50%. Solar cell and module production have increased by more than an order of magnitude during this decade and despite the negative impacts of the ongoing economic crisis since 2009, cumulative installed capacity of PV systems surpassed 100 GW at the end of 2012. In 2013, new installed photovoltaic capacity could for the first time surpass new installed wind power capacity. This is mainly driven by rapid market expansion in Asia, which will be the largest market, surpassing Europe. Photovoltaics is on the right track to become a major electricity source within the next decade.
