Combination of Mesh Adaptivity with Fluid-Structure Interaction in EUROPLEXUS
This report is a sequel to reports and publications on mesh adaptivity in fast transient dynamics and presents the formulation and implementation of mesh adaptivity in combination with Fluid- Structure Interaction (FSI) algorithms in fast transient dynamics. The algorithms are implemented in the EUROPLEXUS code.
The present work concerns the automatic refinement of the fluid mesh near a structure, in order to enhance the treatment of Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI). This technique is particularly useful in conjunction with FSI algorithms of the embedded or immersed type, such as the FLSR or FLSW algorithms available in EUROPLEXUS. With these algorithms, the interacting fluid and structure are discretized in a completely independent way at the topological level. Typically, the fluid is represented by a uniform and regular (even structured)
mesh fixed in space (Eulerian description) used as a “background” mesh. The structure is meshed independently and then it is “embedded” or “immersed” in the fluid mesh. The two meshes are therefore simply superposed.
