Implementation of security and privacy in ePassports and the extended access control infrastructure
Although many papers have been published providing an overview of the security characteristics and weaknesses of electronic passports introduced by ICAO with its Document 9303, few have discussed in detail the public key infrastructures necessary to manage the certificates which underpin the security measures adopted. In this paper we address aspects related to the management of keys and certificates in the context of the security measures adopted in the machine readable travel documents issued by European Union member states focusing in particular on those required by the Extended Access Control and the associated Single Point of Contact protocol.
